Hello Spartan Community,
We wanted to update you on a quick and friendly reminder that we have a policy here at LCHS, that aligns with the CIF policy, that all students must attend at least 50% of the school day in order to participate in any activities after school. Here is the policy, as copied from the Student Registration Handbook:
REQUIRED ATTENDANCE for STUDENT ATHLETES and OTHER EXTRACURRICULAR/CO-CURRICULAR STUDENT ACTIVITIES
All students participating in school-sponsored activities after the school day (practice or participation in a game, rehearsal, performance or activity) MUST attend at least three classes on the day of the activity or event. If the activity or event is on a block schedule day, the student must attend two classes, not including advisory or homeroom. This policy applies to athletes, Pep Squad, Band, Orchestra, Choir, Drama and ASB. If a student violates this policy, she/he will be removed from and not allowed to participate in the game/event. If a violation is discovered after the game/event, the student will not be permitted to participate in the following game/event and receive disciplinary consequences. Requests for exceptions must be made in advance to the administrator overseeing attendance.
The full Student Handbook Policy can be found HERE on p.12.
This information is also in our LCHS Athletics Coaches Handbook on p.15, and is stated as such: “On the day of contests, students are required to be in class at least ½ of the school day (block day requires 2 block periods). If the contest is on Saturday, must be in school at least ½ day Friday the day before.”
From CIF: “To participate in California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) athletic games or practices in the 2024 Southern Section, student athletes must attend at least half of a school day. This includes students who are released early or arrive late.”
As you can see, attendance is very important here at LCHS, and it is a LCUSD and CIF policy that must be followed in order for our programs to remain eligible and active. Coaches, directors, and advisors, please speak with your student athletes, performers, and members about this attendance policy, and reach out to Sarah Beattie (athletic director) or Jill Tobin (assistant principal) if you have any questions. As many of our fall sports enter playoffs, and winter sports are starting, we want to be more sure than ever that this message is being communicated clearly and effectively, and that this policy is being followed. We are here to support.
Go, Spartans!
Mrs. Jill Tobin, M.Ed.
